JC Lewis Insurance Services was founded in 1979 by John C. Lewis, who at the time had 20 years of experience under his belt as president of a large group association brokerage in southern Ohio. Relocating his family to California, he decided to make a go of starting his own company in an industry that had changed little in previous 50 years.
At that time, business computers as we know them today were years away. John had been dealing with the large IBM computers that filled a large room for the previous 10 years, but was never able to get them to quite do everything he needed. When smaller computers began to appear on the market in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, he became intrigued with their potential in a business environment, and quickly purchased one and taught himself to program.
Within weeks, John was proficient enough in basic programming to develop insurance applications that other agents and even large insurance companies could only imagine. Later that year, he developed a rate and quoting system, and presented it to Blue Shield of California. Within a few short months, JC Lewis Insurance Services was at the forefront of one of the top selling products in California.
About that same time, John’s two sons John A. and Stephen Lewis, joined the company, and continue that same professional work ethic taught by their father to this day. If you call and happen to speak with John and Steve, or one of John A’s sons who are also now with the firm, we know you will feel some of that old-fashioned services that seems to be missing from so many businesses today, and you will also get a sense of that same innovation that got us where we are today.
