California High Risk Health Insurance

If you have been turned down for individual health insurance because of pre-existing conditions you're one of many. Broad estimates show as many as 200,000 to 300,000 Californians are unable to get regular individual health insurance due to pre-existing health conditions.

California high risk health insurance, also known as The Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP), has been providing insurance to an estimated 7,100 residents since 1991. Through the program, Californians can qualify for Anthem Blue Cross (PPO) or Kaiser Permanente (HMO) on a guarantee issue basis. To apply for MRMIP you're required to provide a letter of declination from an individual insurance carrier and submit it with your application.

The health plans participating in the California high risk health insurance program (MRMIP), provide comprehensive medical services. This includes in-patient and out-patient hospital and physician services including prescription drugs. All plans have a $500 calendar year deductible, office visit copayments, and preventive care (available before the deductible). Call or email JC Lewis Insurance Services to get a copy of the health plan descriptions for a more detailed outline.

California high risk health insurance may take a while to become effective. Typically a lot of people apply for the coverage and there may be a waiting list. It's necessary to check the waiting list and apply for the coverage early! You will want to have your application, declination letter, first month's premium, and proof of prior coverage to the MRMIP processing department by the 15th of the month. That is, the 15th of the month prior to the month you would like to be effective on the plan. Even if you follow these steps, you might not get the effective date you're looking for.
